Two F.O.L.P.s (Figures of Limited Predictability)—one elliptical and one phallic in form—move through a field of deliberately provocative political language. Each painting occupies a specific position within the larger color study: the three rows progress from one-color to two-color to three-color combinations, while each of the thirteen columns follows a distinct color sequence.
ABOUT THIS SERIES
Public Health Notice is a 39-painting series created in 2018 during a period of intensely divisive political discourse. Presented on raw, unstretched linen with frayed edges and held directly to the wall by custom sculptural pushpins, the works combine confrontational language with brightly colored F.O.L.P.s organized as a continuous color study. The exposed threads and unfinished edges reinforce the sense of a culture hanging by a thread.
Across the 39 works, color progresses systematically while the recurring F.O.L.P. forms enter an environment charged with anger, hostility, and deliberately abrasive language. The contrast is intentional: color and unpredictable form introduce moments of beauty, movement, and possibility into an otherwise corrosive emotional landscape.
The series became a turning point in Zanz’s practice. It was the final painting series created in his Northern Michigan studio, and its emotional weight led to a conscious decision to move away from work rooted in anger and political hostility and toward work intended to lift—to create experiences of curiosity, beauty, humor, color, and joy.
Years later, microscopic details within these paintings revealed unexpected figures, animals, landscapes, and human forms. Those discoveries became the source for Gifts From the Art Gods, transforming details from a series born of political discord into an unexpected exploration of beauty.
