Created in northern Michigan, the Northern series marks the beginning of Thomas Zanz’s exploration into predetermined color structures and controlled unpredictability. These paintings combine disciplined vertical color fields with experimental gestures that would later evolve into F.O.L.P. (Figure of Limited Predictability).

Rather than depicting recognizable subjects, the work investigates how a single spontaneous event can transform an otherwise ordered composition through color, movement, and chance.
