ABOUT THE GREAT RECESSION G7 SERIES
Great Recession G7 is a seven-painting series created in 2009 in direct response to the global financial crisis. Each work takes the flag of a G7 nation as its ground, combining national identity with a F.O.L.P. (Figure of Limited Predictability) and handwritten language drawn from phrases heard and repeated during the recession.
The F.O.L.P.s, rendered in deliberately putrid colors, evoke the toxic financial assets at the center of the crisis. Against the order and familiarity of the national flags, their unpredictable forms become intrusions—visual counterparts to the instability and uncertainty of the period.
The series marked an important expansion of Zanz’s use of text within the paintings themselves. Image, language, color, and controlled unpredictability operate together, allowing each work to function as both a painting and a record of its historical moment.
