The blue strip on the front left frame is part of a color study in the rotation through the wheel. The emphasis is on the saturated color and its tinted offspring. The perimeter of the exposed white linen is typical black. To the inside of the black is a tint of the one saturated color other than the saturated blue making up the color. The remaining constitution of the color is a summarization of all tints in the series minus the tint of the saturated color in the folp. Each piece rotates through the wheel with this relationship, skipping blue. A circular color wand was used for the first time in a series. The major common denominators in all the pieces are the “beautiful blue” squarish whirlpool, the saturated blue in the folp, and the exposed white linen. Other than that, the word phase is supposed to create a totally different image from one painting to another.
